Parents

Parents and guardians play an important role in student achievement. If you have a question or concern, please talk with your student's teacher or contact the school office. We are here to support all students.

Student Parent Handbook

This handbook is intended as a method of communicating to students and parents regarding general school district information, rules, and procedures. The Corvallis School District's complete handbook is available at the link below.

Regular attendance is critical to the success of your student. We ask that you work with and encourage your students to regularly attend classes and arrive on time so they can build a strong foundation as they progress toward independence.

Circumstances for an Excused Absence

A child may be excused from school for the following circumstances:

  • Student illness or injury
  • Bereavement or illness of an immediate family member that requires the student to stay home
  • Religious instruction (under regulation of Oregon law)
  • Educational or occupational interviews
  • Emergency situations that require the student’s absence
  • School-approved field trips and activities
  • Medical or dental appointments (verification of appointment may be needed)
  • Legal or court appointments
  • Other reasons approved by the Corvallis School District

Arriving to Class on Time

Students must use passing time wisely. Students should be in their seats and ready to learn when the bell rings; otherwise, they will be marked tardy.

  • Noon detention will be assigned after the 3rd tardy.
  • Additional consequences can result from excessive tardies including phone calls and meetings with parent/guardian/home partner.
  • Students arriving more than 10 minutes late without a pass will be marked absent for that class period.
  • Tardy tracking restarts at the beginning of each trimester.

Attendance alerts

There may be lag time between the time you report your student’s absence as excused and the time the information is entered into the database. It is also possible that a student who is marked absent is actually tardy, and the absence will be changed later in the day.  Please allow time for data to become current before contacting the attendance office.

Our attendance alerts go through your ParentSquare account (this is separate from ParentVUE).

Excusing an Absence

Please call the Corvallis Junior High attendance line at (541) 757-3980 before 9:15 am on the day of the absence.

Voicemail is available on the attendance line 24/7 for your convenience. Parent/guardians/home partners can also leave a note at the main office prior to the day of the absence. When excusing your student’s absence, please include:

  • Your name and relationship to the student
  • Student’s full name
  • Date, time and reason for absence
  • Phone number where you can be contacted
  • If no reason is given, the student will be considered unexcused.

Planning Absences

If you are making plans to take a vacation outside of the regularly scheduled school year or vacations/days off, you must complete the Corvallis Junior High Pre-Arranged Absence Form (available in the office upon request) and submit it to the front office for approval at least two days before the absence begins.

The office must be notified if your student will be picked up from school by anyone other than their parent, guardian, or a person on the emergency contact list.

If you are picking up your student early from school, please call before you arrive at the school! This allows us to have your child ready to go to sign your student out when you arrive. Please note that it is difficult to track down a student during lunch/recess, as students have choices regarding where they go during these times.

We encourage you to stay up to date on what’s happening at school. News and announcements are sent to parents/guardians via ParentSquare. If you are not receiving regular email updates, please contact the main office. Our district uses Gradebook, an online gradebook. A username and password is required. Please check with the school office if you have questions.

Our school community welcomes your donation of time and talent! There are many ways to get involved through volunteering at Corvallis Junior High, including: Back to school supplies packing, display case volunteers, field trips, health screenings, Jogathon, Library, lunch time chaperones, office help, Greek Olympics, and Mary’s Peak outdoor experience.

All volunteers are required to complete the Corvallis School District volunteer application and background check. The application is online at the link below. Please allow three weeks for processing.

Academic success is strongly linked with student health. We encourage healthy behaviors and provide health supports to students in the Corvallis Junior High Health Room, located in the main office at the front entrance of the building. If you have concerns about your student’s health and well-being, please contact our main office to learn about local resources.

We are committed to a healthy school environment. Students should be up-to-date on immunizations and stay home if they are ill. Parents/guardians are required to complete the required forms for any medication that a student takes to school.

Health Room

The Health Room is located adjacent to the front office and is available to students who feel ill or have a minor injury. It is also the location where students are administered medications under adult supervision. Any medication at school, including over-the-counter medication, must be accompanied by a Medication Permission and Administration Form completed by a parent or guardian. Forms are available in the school office.

If a student becomes ill at school, they should notify the nearest teacher or supervising adult. Students will be admitted to the health room to determine if they are feeling better or if they need to go home. If the parent/guardian is not available by phone, we will call those listed as emergency contacts on the student’s emergency/information card so that they may be taken home.

It is the responsibility of the entire school community to foster a safe environment which promotes positive relationships that value intellectual, emotional, social and physical development for everyone. Our staff are trained and prepared to educate students to be responsible and safe at school.

Emergency Situations

In the event of an emergency, staff are trained to follow a standard response protocol for a variety of situations. All schools are required to perform monthly safety drills. Please update your student’s emergency contact information each year.

Bullying and Harassment Prevention

Bullying is when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying is a form of intimidation or domination toward someone usually accomplished through some sort of coercion or force. It may involve physical aggression such as fighting, shoving, or kicking; verbal aggression, such as name-calling or threats; or emotional aggression, such as menacing looks or gestures, social isolation, or harassment.

Cyberbullying refers to using technology (usually computers or cell phones) to harass, threaten, humiliate, or otherwise harass someone. Examples include sending embarrassing or disturbing pictures, videos, or messages to someone, or spreading malicious rumors about a person via the internet or a cell phone.

What you can do

  • Talk with your student about what bullying looks like and how to define it.
  • Help your student understand the importance of treating everyone with respect.
  • Ask your student about their classes and what is happening at school.
  • Encourage your student to stand up for others.

Everyone in your student’s school has a role to play in bullying prevention. Administrators, teachers, counselors, and all support staff are expected to make every effort to help students feel safe in school. Elementary schools utilize Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) which includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create a positive school environment.

Our goal is to maintain a safe environment that fosters student learning. Policies are in place to help us respond to and correct disruptive or dangerous behaviors. If you have concerns about your student, please contact your child’s counselor or the main office.

Report a Bias Incident

A bias incident is a person’s hostile expression toward another person, relating to the other person’s perceived race, color, religion, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin. Bias incidents may include derogatory language or behavior. Reporting bias and symbols of hate allows school staff to formally address Bias Incidents and provides important information about bias and hate so that we can improve the culture of our district and school communities. Click here to learn more and report a bias incident.

All Corvallis Junior High parents and guardians are welcome to join us. The PTO supports school activities and events through fundraising and coordinating volunteers.
